1. What is tencel fabric?

Tencel fabric, also known as Lyocell, is a type of fabric woven from Tencel fibers exclusively produced by Lenzing AG. The characteristic feature of this fabric is that it is made from cellulose-rich beechwood pulp. Since the 1970s, Tencel fabric has become popular and widely used.

The production process of Tencel fabric begins with debarking and preprocessing the beechwood, grinding it into pulp. The wood pulp is then spun into fibers. What’s unique is that Tencel fibers are produced from natural raw materials and processed using Nano technology, creating a completely natural, safe, and skin-friendly Tencel fabric.

Moreover, Lenzing utilizes beechwood from sustainably managed forests, which adhere to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and are certified by the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

With its natural composition and advanced technology, Tencel fabric not only provides comfort but also ensures sustainability and environmental friendliness. Therefore, it has become a popular choice for consumers and is changing the way we perceive the fashion industry.

At WELL FABRIC, we personally weave Tencel fabric using sustainable and high-quality Tencel fibers that are fully eco-certified. This ensures that we supply this fabric to our customers who are specialized garment manufacturers.

2. How is tencel fabric produced?

  1. Step 1: Raw material preparation – Beechwood is milled and extracted to obtain cellulose.
  2. Step 2: Preparing for the fiber spinning process – Cellulose is dissolved in water and the organic solvent NMMO to form a viscous solution, preparing it for the fiber spinning process.
  3. Step 3: Fiber formation – The cellulose solution is extruded through a part called a spinneret, creating continuous long fibers. These fibers then pass through a coagulation bath and a cleaning process to remove excess chemicals on the fiber surface.
  4. Step 4: Yarn drawing – fibers are either cut into stape fiber or filament, stape fiber can be blended with other fibers like cotton for further  yarn spinning processes.
  5. Step 5, Fabric: After the fibers are spun, they are weaving (knit/woven) into fabric. It can be woven using either the traditional loom or the knitting technique.

Importantly, the production process of Tencel fabric is designed as a closed-loop system, where the organic solvent NMMO is recycled for subsequent dissolving processes. This helps maintain an environmentally non-impactful production process, and Tencel fabric is considered a biodegradable and eco-friendly product.

Currently, the majority of fabrics at WELL FABRIC are processed using the Lyocell method, as Lyocell offers several advantages over rayon and modal.

Combination of nature and Nano technology: With the combination of natural materials and Nano technology, Tencel fabric has the ability to resist fiber aging, improve blood circulation, prevent mold, and provide superior protection against bacterial infection.

4. Advantages and disadvantages of tencel fabric

4.1 Advantages

Environmentally friendly fabric: Tencel fabric biodegrades in soil, causing no environmental pollution. This material does not use toxic chemicals or harmful solvents. Additionally, the production process of Tencel fabric does not require bleaching agents and allows for reusability.

Health benefits: With excellent moisture absorption ability, wearing Tencel fabric provides comfort without feeling hot or suffocated like other fabrics.

Safe for sensitive skin: Tencel fabric is breathable and has high antibacterial properties. This helps minimize the presence of bacteria on the fabric, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.

Diverse and eye-catching colors: Tencel fibers are easy to dye and have high durability, allowing for a wide range of color options. This creates attractive products that grab attention.

With these advantages, it’s no surprise that Tencel fabric is increasingly becoming the top choice in the textile industry and household products.

4.2 Disadvantages

The only drawback of Tencel fabric is its higher cost compared to other fabrics such as cotton or polyester. The advanced technology and complex manufacturing process of Tencel fabric result in high-quality products but relatively higher prices.

With its outstanding benefits, Tencel fabric is now widely used in the textile industry for garment production, including Tencel clothing, as well as the manufacturing of bed sheets and pillows.

Garment production

Currently, Tencel fabric, including Tencel clothing, is commonly used in everyday clothing items such as sportswear and underwear due to its excellent moisture absorption ability.

Not only a consumer choice, manufacturers also favor using Tencel fabric, including Tencel clothing, to create diverse designs, easily dye the fabric, and add high value to the products.

Bed sheet and pillow manufacturing

Tencel material is extensively applied in the production of bed sheets and pillows due to its health benefits, hygiene assurance, and soft, comfortable feel.

By choosing bed sheets and pillows made from Tencel fabric, you will experience the excellent advantages that this material brings, maximizing daily sleep care.

7. Care and maintenance of Tencel fabric

After washing, hang Tencel fabric in a shaded and well-ventilated area for natural drying. This helps the fabric dry in the best possible way.

Avoid washing Tencel fabric in rainy weather as water can seep into the fabric fibers and cause mildew. Also, avoid placing the fabric under intense sunlight to prevent fabric shrinkage.

In damp weather conditions or when the fabric cannot be air-dried, you can use a fan to dry the fabric. Never use a dryer, as the high heat from the machine can damage the fabric.

To preserve Tencel bed sheets, pillows, and clothing, store them in a dry and well-ventilated place. Avoid placing them in damp areas prone to mold and dust accumulation. This helps keep the fabric durable and fresh.
